The skinny on construction from corridors to completed here in San Antonio area

If you’ve recently made the drive from San Marcos down to San Antonio — whether for work, weekend errands or a spontaneous Hill Country escape — you’ve seen the orange barrels, flashing signage, shifting lanes and fresh pavement that signal one thing: big infrastructure work is underway. Well, in Texas it's ALWAYS underway. Meh.

But while the shiny new roads and exit ramps are great for travel efficiency, they also bring a side effect few drivers think about right away: a higher chance of minor body damage, dings and dents. So today, Texas Dents is exploring why paintless dent repair (PDR) and paintless dent removal are more relevant than ever for San Antonio drivers and dealerships.

A Look at TxDOT Projects
Take the Interstate 35 corridor through San Marcos as an example. The I‑35 at SH 123 Project is a whopping $107 million effort by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) that’s reconstructing both the northbound and southbound frontage roads, the bridges at the San Marcos River and the SH 123 / I-35 interchange. Construction began in 2021 and is slated for completion in early 2025.

The result? Traffic shifting zones, uneven surfaces during construction and increased driver exposure to stray gravel, lane merges and other minor impact risks. For drivers of all kinds—from commuters to out-of-towners—these conditions raise the risk of body damage that’s just right for PDR.

Then, be sure to note the improvements closer to San Antonio. The Loop 1604 North Expansion is a $1.4 billion, 23-mile overhaul designed to widen lanes and improve mobility across North Bexar County. Construction here has included new flyovers, ramp changes, paving work and more. According to a KSAT update, “Three major projects including Loop 1604 are scheduled to finish in 2025.”

So, Texas drivers, what's the takeaway? More construction means more risk for vehicles—but also more opportunity for quickly fixing those pesky dents before they become bigger problems.

Why Infrastructure Upgrades = Dent Risk
When highways are being reconstructed, trafficked lanes shift, temporary ramps are used, and resurfacing exposes loose aggregate. All of this means:
  • Vehicles pass through construction zones where rock-kick up is more likely

  • Parking lots near new exits or retail nodes (for example near San Marcos or far-north San Antonio) may still be settling

  • Drivers navigating construction are dealing with tighter space or inconsistent lighting

  • The resurfaced lanes and new flyovers invite faster speeds—higher speed plus debris equals higher chance of paint chips and dents
In short, when your drive looks slicker, the environment your car travels through may still have increased hazards. That’s where PDR comes in—if your car picks up a small dent after one of these trips, paintless dent repair is often the best solution. It preserves your original paint, fixes damage quickly and helps you maintain your vehicle’s value without a full body-shop repaint.

What SA Drivers Should Do
If you’re commuting between San Marcos, New Braunfels and San Antonio, here are some proactive steps:
  • After a construction-heavy run, pause in safe lighting (sunset or early morning works) and scan your hood, roof and side panels for subtle dimples. The light angle matters.

  • If you’re parked near a newly completed ramp, shopping center or fast-changing interchange (like near Loop 1604 or U.S. 281), examine the doors and bumpers again—tight spaces plus new traffic flows can create fresh dents.

  • Choose trusted providers who specialize in paintless dent removal rather than defaulting to a body-shop. A small dent treated early with PDR is far less expensive and faster to fix.

  • Book inspection early. Because often the first few months after a highway opens or reroutes see the most “adjustment” accidents/impacts—consider a check-up within 30 days of a major drive.
Long-Term Value of PDR
Ignoring a small dent may seem harmless, but in the Texas climate it can worsen quickly. Heat, humidity and road vibrations cause metal to flex. That might crack paint, let moisture enter and begin rust. Conversely, choosing a service like paintless dent repair keeps the factory finish intact, maintains resale value and ensures your vehicle reflects the quality of the roads you travel on—rather than the damage.

Local Relevance: San Marcos to San Antonio
If your routine includes driving the I-35 corridor south from San Marcos (maybe stopping at the major retail hub, local college zones or travel stops like Buc‑ee’s in New Braunfels), you’re likely navigating both everyday driving and zones that were recently transformed by infrastructure work.

New ramps, altered exits, tighter merging—all of these adjust the risk equation for your vehicle’s exterior. For residents of Comal, Hays or Bexar counties, this awareness translates directly into choosing a dent repair specialist that understands regional patterns—not a generic shop servicing the state broadly.

Case in Point: Recent Ramp Openings
One concrete example: a new entrance ramp connecting Bandera Road to eastbound Loop 1604 recently opened—part of the major Loop 1604 expansion.

With that ramp now operational, traffic patterns on the city’s northwest side have already shifted. That means side streets, parking lots near the ramp and driver behaviors have changed, which can lead to unexpected dents. For a vehicle owner, the difference between “I didn’t notice the dent happen” and “I fixed it before it spread” is significant. That’s why paintless dent removal is timely.

Be Practical: Book PDR After Big Drives
Think of it this way: if you’ve done a long run down I-35, stopped in one of the new retail parking areas near a construction zone, or noticed a weird shimmer in your panel—don’t wait until the next service. Make a call, schedule a dent inspection and reclaim your vehicle’s condition. With the right paintless dent repair team, you’re not just restoring appearance—you’re protecting investment.

FAQs About Highway Drives & Paintless Dent Repair

Can construction zones cause damage fixable with PDR?
Yes — many dents from flying gravel or door impacts adjacent to construction are ideal for paintless dent repair.

How long after a highway drive should I inspect my car?
Within a week is best—small dents often “settle” visibly once the vehicle cools down or reaches shade.

Is PDR reliable on multiple-panel damage?
Absolutely. Certified technicians can address clusters of dents the same session.

Does PDR affect my insurance claim?
No, most comprehensive policies cover repaired damage, and PDR can lower claim costs versus body-shop estimates. Plus, we work with insurance to ensure a smooth process with no surprises, so you get the best deal possible.

How do I know if a dent is suitable for PDR?
If the paint isn’t cracked and the metal isn’t sharply creased, paintless dent removal is usually a strong option.

Texas, especially Central Texas, is a hotspot for hail due to its unique geography and climate. The state sits at the crossroads of warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cooler, dry air from the north and west. When these air masses collide, they create the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorms and hail.

Contrary to what many believe, PDR is not just a “pop-it-out” job. And our friends who try it themselves at home with a kit they bought on eBay and a YouTube video know this to be true! Lol. It's A LOT harder than it looks. It requires finesse and years of hands-on training. We've worked on every kind of vehicle there is for nearly 20 years, so we have a deep understanding of vehicle anatomy that many PDR shops don't possess.

On March 31, 2025, San Antonio experienced a severe thunderstorm that brought significant hail to various parts of the city. The storm developed rapidly over Medina County and moved southeast toward the SeaWorld area around 5:30 p.m. Residents were alerted to the potential for "ping-pong" sized hailstones, 60 mph winds and frequent lightning. By 6:30 p.m. yesterday evening, the National Weather Service reported that the severe thunderstorm over San Antonio had weakened and was no longer considered severe. However, two strong thunderstorms remained in the area: one over the south side of San Antonio moving southeast at 30 mph, capable of heavy downpours, small hail, and strong wind gusts; and another near SeaWorld, moving southeast toward JBSA Lackland and Von Ormy, with potential for penny-sized hail and 45 mph wind gusts. These storms were expected to weaken over the next 1-2 hours, with rain likely ending for Bexar County by 7:30 p.m. Ping-Pong Sized Hail Residents shared images and videos of the hail on social media platforms. For instance, KSAT Connect featured photos showing golf ball-sized hail in areas like Stevens High School and Culebra and Westover Hills. KENS5 and FoxSanAntonio posted pics and videos from nearby residents. Check out our Insta reel with some of the most compelling highlights ! The far west side of San Antonio, including the Loop 1604 and Potranco area, appeared to be among the hardest-hit regions. Videos captured heavy rain and quarter-sized hail, reducing visibility on neighborhood streets. Despite the intensity of the storm, the rain-cooled air led to a pleasant evening, with temperatures dropping into the upper 60s to 70s. Looking ahead, scattered storms with minimal impact are possible over the upcoming weekend, with temperatures expected to range from the mid-80s to low 90s. Exploring Hail Formation Hail formation—especially the large hail San Antonio experienced—is a fascinating (and intense!) weather phenomenon tied closely to the strength of thunderstorms. Why did the hail form? Hail forms inside strong thunderstorm clouds—specifically cumulonimbus clouds—when there are powerful updrafts (rising currents of air). Here’s the science behind it: Supercooled Water Droplets High in the storm cloud, temperatures are well below freezing, and water droplets remain in a liquid state below 32°F. These are called supercooled droplets. Nucleus Formation These droplets latch onto particles (like dust or pollen) and start to freeze—this becomes the nucleus of a hailstone. Updrafts Strong winds within the thunderstorm carry the tiny frozen stones upward, where they encounter more supercooled droplets. Each time they go up, they grow in layers—like an onion. Hailstone Growth Cycle The up-and-down motion in the storm can happen multiple times. Each cycle adds more layers of ice, increasing the size of the hailstone. Gravity Wins Eventually, the hailstone becomes too heavy for the updraft to support, and it falls to the ground—sometimes at speeds over 90 mph! Why Was the Hail So Big? Several factors made this storm ideal for producing large hail in San Antonio: The strength of the thunderstorm determines how long hailstones stay aloft to grow Reports from the March 31 storm showed hail up to golf ball and ping-pong ball size—which means the updrafts were strong enough to keep those stones suspended through several growth cycles The atmosphere was very unstable—a sharp contrast between warm, moist air near the surface and cold air aloft This instability supercharged the storm, helping hailstones form quickly and grow large Plenty of moisture in the atmosphere (likely from Gulf moisture moving inland) provided a continuous source of supercooled water for hailstones to grow The storm likely had supercell characteristics, meaning it was rotating and well-organized Supercells are notorious for producing large hail due to their powerful updrafts and long lifespan How Meteorologists Knew It Was Coming Weather radar can detect hail with a feature called dual-polarization, which picks up irregular shapes and high reflectivity in storms. The National Weather Service issued alerts predicting ping-pong-sized hail due to those radar signatures and storm conditions.
