Back to School, Back to Business: Why Fall Is a Great Time to Fix Those Dents
The kids are back in class, schedules are settling down and now is a smart time to take care of that dent before the holiday rush.
The kids are back in school, routines are returning, and that dent you’ve been ignoring all summer is suddenly back on the to-do list. Here’s why early fall is a smart time for paintless dent repair in Texas.
Back-to-school season changes the rhythm of just about everything. Vacations wind down. Weekends start filling up with sports and activities again. Work gets back to normal. And here at Texas Dents, we notice something else: people start calling about those dents they’ve been meaning to fix.
Maybe it’s the door ding you picked up in a parking lot three months ago. Maybe a spring hailstorm left a handful of dents across your hood. Or maybe there’s a crease in your door that you kept telling yourself you’d deal with “after summer.”
Well, despite the temperature, summer is pretty much over.
For drivers from San Antonio to Austin to Dallas, early fall can be a great time to finally take care of vehicle dents with paintless dent repair (PDR). Your schedule may be getting more predictable, holiday travel hasn’t started yet, and there’s still plenty of Texas weather ahead.
That Dent Didn’t Go Away While You Were on Vacation
We get it. A dent that doesn’t affect the way your vehicle drives is pretty easy to push down the priority list.
During summer, you may be traveling, hauling kids around, spending weekends at the lake or simply trying to keep up with everything else. A door ding or a few hail dents become something you notice every time the light hits your car just right…and then promptly forget about again.
Back-to-school season gives a lot of people their routine back.
That makes September a natural time to knock out some of the things you’ve been putting off. And if you’ve been assuming dent repair automatically means days at a body shop, repainting or major inconvenience, that may not be the case.
With paintless dent repair, many dents can be repaired without sanding, body filler or repainting. Specialized PDR tools allow an experienced technician to carefully reshape the damaged metal while preserving the vehicle’s existing finish.
That includes much more than little round door dings.
Creases, Door Dings and Those Mystery Parking Lot Dents
School drop-offs, grocery stores, football games, practices, work parking garages…fall means parking lots get busy again.
Unfortunately, car doors and shopping carts aren’t always great neighbors.
We regularly see dents that owners assume are too deep, too long or too complicated for PDR. Creases are a perfect example. A sharp line across a door can look like an automatic trip to a traditional body shop, but many creases can be repaired through PDR if the paint is intact and the metal hasn’t been excessively stretched.
The same goes for dents along body lines and even some larger dents.
That’s why we always tell people: don’t decide a dent can’t be fixed before a PDR technician has actually looked at it.
The size of the damage is only one part of the equation. We also look at its depth, location, paint condition, panel material and how much the metal moved during the impact.
Sometimes the scary-looking dent is surprisingly repairable.
And No, Texas Hail Season Isn’t Necessarily “Over”
Spring gets most of the attention when we talk about hail in Texas, and for good reason. But putting hail completely out of your mind once September arrives isn’t a great strategy either.
Texas recorded 902 major hail events in 2025, more than any other state, according to NOAA Storm Prediction Center data compiled by the Insurance Information Institute. Those statistics count hail of at least one inch in diameter.
And we've already had a reminder right here along the I-35 corridor.
On August 27, 2026, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for central Travis County, including Austin, Lakeway and surrounding communities, with radar indicating hail. Another warning later that afternoon included southern Travis and eastern Hays counties. The following evening, another severe storm warning covered portions of Bexar County near San Antonio with the possibility of nickel-size hail.
In other words, the calendar may say “back to school,” but Texas weather hasn’t necessarily gotten the memo.
Fall Weather Can Still Get Interesting in North Texas
That’s especially true as you head north toward Dallas.
The National Weather Service Fort Worth office notes that spring and fall are typically the wettest transition seasons in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, with much of that rainfall associated with thunderstorms. While severe weather frequency peaks in spring, the NWS says large hail, damaging winds, flooding and tornadoes occur in the Metroplex nearly every year.
Around Austin and San Antonio, September generally carries a lower severe-weather risk than peak spring months, but the National Weather Service says the month typically brings the arrival of early fall fronts and increasing rainfall.
So while we’re certainly not saying another hailstorm is around the corner, we are saying Texas drivers shouldn’t think hail is exclusively a March-through-May problem.
Already Have Hail Damage? Now Is a Good Time to Get It Checked
Another thing we hear frequently is, “It’s only a few little dents. Is it even worth fixing?”
First, there may be more hail damage than you realize.
Hail dents are notoriously easy to miss in ordinary lighting. A hood that appears to have five or six dings in your driveway can reveal considerably more damage once we inspect it under specialized PDR reflection lights.
Those lights cast a consistent pattern across the vehicle panel, making tiny highs and lows in the metal much easier for a trained technician to see. That’s also why we don't recommend deciding how extensive your hail damage is based solely on a quick walk around the car. If your vehicle was outside during a hailstorm, let us take a look.
PDR Can Handle More Hail Dents Than You Might Think
A dozen hail dents certainly does not rule out paintless dent repair.
After a hailstorm, we may find dents across the hood, roof, trunk, fenders and doors. Our technicians methodically works across the vehicle, repairing each damaged area while constantly checking the metal under PDR lighting.
And the scale of hail damage nationwide is huge. State Farm reported paying more than $5.6 billion in hail-related claims in 2025 across homes, vehicles and other property.
For vehicle owners, the takeaway is simple: hail damage is common, and PDR is an established way to address many of those dents without unnecessarily disturbing factory paint.
Fix It Before the End-of-Year Rush
There’s another reason we like this time of year for dent repair: we’re not at the holidays yet. Once November and December hit, schedules get complicated again. There are road trips, family visits, holiday events and end-of-year everything.
If you’ve spent all summer looking at that dent every time you walk up to your car, why carry it into another season?
Getting it evaluated now also means you'll know what you're dealing with. Maybe it’s an easy PDR repair. Maybe the damage is more involved. Either way, you can make a decision instead of continuing to wonder about it.
